Honor proposed for Puerto Rico-based Army unit. The Puerto Rico-based 65th Infantry Regiment. Who fought in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. HARTFORD, CONN. — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal has introduced a bill to recognize an Army infantry regiment that was made up almost entirely of soldiers from Puerto Rico who fought in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. The Puerto Rico-based 65th Infantry Regiment was a segregated unit whose members, known as Borinqueneers, had to contend with discrimination as well as enemy fire. The bill introduced Tuesday by Blumenthal would award the Congressional Gold Medal to the unit. He said it would ensure the unit receives the recognition it deserves for bravery in battle.
