Honorifics, one of my Letters to the Editor, published in The New INDIAN EXPRESS on 23 June 2005: When I read Status quo mentality by Soli J Sorabjee (TNSE, June 19), the golden words of Jawaharlal Nehru came to my mind. In one of his fortnightly letters, dated May 18, 1952, addressed to the Chief Ministers, Nehru said: You will have noticed that we have decided to give up honorific appellations like Honourable and His Excellency. Our President, the highest in the State, has no such title or prefix attached to him and there was no particular reason why others should, except the vanity of human beings. It is a good thing, therefore, that we have given this up. Even after 53 years of this letter, the appellations have not left us. The courts and legislatures of this land reverberate with the sound of these titles. There is vanity everywhere. Honour should go with ones deeds, not with designation.
