Hooking up with my very old friend Dr Dennis Williams today, for the sad occasion of the funeral of Bob Morris - the first person I ever met directly involved in the Battle of Britain. Bob was then an 18 year old Engine Fitter IIA on 66 (Spitfire) Squadron, with which he served throughout the epic summer of 1940 and beyond. As Dennis rightly said, Bob was a rare blend of Herefordshire countryman and aeronautical engineer. He was also a founder member of our former Malvern Spitfire Team, and never, ever, missed an event, whether an aircraft excavation, exhibition opening, memorial dedication and service, or a book launch. Bobs enthusiasm was inspirational, and I always remember him saying this, as he saw Duxford from a train window upon his arrival at 66 Squadron: Here were Spitfires.... everywhere.... every young mans dream! Rest in Peace, old friend. A legend.
