Hooray and Yippy for Momentum-Preserving Roundabouts This - TopicsExpress

Hooray and Yippy for Momentum-Preserving Roundabouts This morning my grandson Lukas and I discovered a new cycling route from our home in Playa del Rey to Lukass nursery school in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles that includes two consecutive roundabouts on 80th Street. Although slightly longer than the previous route we used, that route put momentum-killing all-way stops at the bottom of every hill which of course made climbing the following hill even more difficult. Being able to keep our momentum through these roundabouts (which are almost always clear of traffic) more than makes up for the slightly added distance (and is a whole lot more fun, too!). The preceding speed bumps are a bit of a bother, but no real problem at the speed we are cycling. I think you can see from Lukass expressions that he also approves! Just about every one of the too-many all-way stops in Santa Monica on residential streets could be replaced with a mini-roundabout at a reasonable cost. How about starting on the most popular cycling routes? More convenient, safer, less noise and pollution and attractive, too. Whats not to like? vimeo/90133080
