Hope Im not running this subject into the ground...However, I wrote a Letter to the Editor, (Monterey Herald), KSBW, and KION. I said basically the same thing I said to the Del Rey Oaks City Council with one LITTLE TIDBIT about the Chief of Police. Here is my letter. Would appreciate any feedback on it. I would also appreciate anyone and everyone coming to the meeting at DRO City Hall on Tuesday, August 26th at 6pm and help us eliminate this excessive fee, and help us save our park. Letter: My family has resided in Del Rey Oaks since 1968. Approximately a month ago a sign was posted (above) on the entrance of the Del Rey Oaks Dog park. I have had the pleasure of raising, and socializing my dog, Angel, a 2-year old registered Doberman Pincher, at our city dog park It is a lovely community where people from all different walks of life, nationalities, and social standings come together with one common bond: our dogs. We have celebrated dog-birthdays, people birthdays, and goodbye parties for young families who were stationed at DLI and/or Naval Post Graduate School. Believe me, our Del Rey Oaks Dog Park is much more than a dog park! Regarding the yearly fee: Word through the “grapevine” has it that the Chief of Police of Del Rey Oaks stepped in dog droppings and that’s when the “trouble” began. After extensive research, I have found no other park in our area, or in the San Jose area, that charge a fee for a city park, much less an excessive fee such as this. There was one meeting (March 2014) prior to the appearance of this sign where complaints included: dog droppings not being picked up, aggressive dogs, dogs barking and disturbing the neighbors. In response to these complaints: The majority of us, do, in fact, pick up after our dogs, and we truly appreciate the doggie bags left there by the city for this reason. We have noticed that droppings outside of the enclosed area have been left by people who are just walking their dogs on the path, or by the people having parties in the BBQ areas. I, as well as many others, have picked up after them. As far as aggressive dogs – we ask the owners if they cannot control their dog, to please remove them from the park. Barking – well, no argument here - dogs do bark, and sometimes very loudly. However, the location of the park is perfect…far enough away from most neighbors to hear. Also, at that meeting in March, the “dog park people” were told that a group would be formed consisting of dog owners, and other interested parties to discuss and figure out solutions to these complaints. People I know personally signed up to be a part of this group. They were never called, and the next thing that happened was 4 months later: The Sign. I am encouraging any dog owner on the Peninsula to come to the Del Rey Oaks City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 26th, at 6 pm and let your voice be heard. We love our dog park, please help us save it. Thank you.
