Hope and RESQ 27 This is my thesis video component. My thesis is Type Talks: Performative Typography in Early 1950s Sci-Fi and Horror Film Trailers. The typography for both trailers and title sequences was designed specifically to evoke the emotional dimensions of the film’s content. These ‘performative’ typefaces have expressive qualities that transform the text into an image. This ‘performative’ aspect of the typography enhances the trailer’s function as a promotion for the film. In the visual component of this thesis, this topic was explored with the creation of a PSA that utilizes performative type. Because a PSA has the goal not just of informing the audience, but also of calling them to act, performative text can be applied to give the audience a deeper understanding of the information contained in the PSA.
