Hope everyone had an amazing weekend. It was such a joy to be outside. Sometimes nature can be a stress reliever and lift us up for Monday morning. I was thinking of Jim McMillan this morning ; I know many of you heard him this summer. I believe Jim is the most outstanding consultant I have ever heard. He is smart, motivational and fun. If your school or business hasn’t had him come to visit please don’t miss the opportunity this year. You can call Valerie at the C.L.A.S.S. office (317 815 9015) to schedule a visit. He talks about everything from behavior, literacy, teaching strategies, evaluation, how to help staffs build community, and many more topics connected to your needs. Enjoy! Now let’s get back to the messages we have been receiving about behavior. These comments are for the group that wants the ‘quick fix’. Unfortunately in school and in life there are not many quick fixes that will accomplish your goals. You want a positive classroom where everyone is respecting each other and engaged in their lessons and there is a way that can happen. If you just want to get through the year there are some ‘games’ you can play. If you want your students to be prepared socially and academically for life; that takes patience, instruction, and practice time. It takes teaching and being consistent with your students daily even though when they go to lunch or between classes they see misbehavior. It takes a true leader to help students through the temptation and motivate them to want to start doing what is right. For you who use ‘clip up and clip down’ do you really think you are being fair to everyone. We have observed classrooms when a couple of kids got to clip up and there were about three others doing exactly the same thing but no clipping for them. After observing this for years it seems a lot of clipping depends on if the teacher is in a good mood or not. We have even seen kids yell out are you clipping during math. This has nothing to do with teaching behavior. The kids with problems think it is a joke since they never get to clip up except for some unrelated incident. The only worse game is flipping cards. On the way to the bus we have had students tell us everyone in their room who had to go to yellow and red today, but they do not have a clue about what they learned. The skills we want in life rarely light on us like a butterfly. We have to have the knowledge, understanding, rehearsal time and feedback to help us learn. We also need to have the courage and support to go against the masses that are making poor decisions. Respected teachers who are leading with trust can make that happen. Tomorrow we will continue with the journey to positive behavior. Keep your joy.
