Hope for the Future Read Jeremiah 22:1 through 24:10 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5). Great hope came from the promise that God’s faithful leader, the Messiah, would establish a perfect kingdom—for Israel and for the entire world. Until then, imperfect and sometimes evil persons find their way into political and religious leadership. Referring to them as “shepherds,” the prophet warned kings to rule with integrity and compassion. Failure to obey would result in consequences that would affect the entire nation. Later in the chapter, the Lord, through Jeremiah, accused the prophets of corruption (23:9–17). Their vain words served their own interests. They failed to convey God’s truth. Jeremiah’s prophecy remains valid today. Certainly, corruption exists in government, society, even the church. As Christians, we are to remain faithful, resisting the tendency to cynicism. Regardless of what happens, we can look expectantly for the return of Jesus. Challenge for Today: Focus on God’s future. Quicklook: Jeremiah 23:1–8
