Hope that you have had a good day. My day has been very quiet. I flew into Tunis, Tunisia today from Palermo, Sicily and then Rome. I think that I was the only Black person on all three flights. I am staying in an old hotel in the center of the city. Tunisia is the smallest country in North Africa. You do see some Black people here in Tunis--the capital--but most of the Black people in Tunisia, like all of North Africa, live in the southern part of the country where they are not treated well. I know of no Black people here in positions of power and authority. The dominant languages here are French and Arabic. The currency is the Tunisian dinar. Why is Tunisia important for African researchers? Mostly because Tunisia is the location of ancient Carthage and the home of the great African general and statesman--Hannibal Barca. This is my third visit here. Many Africans in the Diaspora know of Tunisia through the composition performed by Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan and Chaka Khan--A Night in Tunisia.
