Hope you wont mind if I share this - Review by Ralph Thomas The 39 Steps is a parody of the Alfred Hitchcock classic film and was a fine mode of celebration for RATS 200th production. The play moves somewhat miraculously between The London Palladium and the Scottish Moors via Edinburgh Station and is was an absolute triumph for director Carol Coleman and the technical team of Lucy Chiplin, Alan Blakoe and Jeremy Jones. This play was hilarious and the seven strong versatile cast, led by Tony Allan as Richard Hannay were outstanding. The set worked magnificently and I was very impressed when the old carriages of a steam driven train arrived on stage, as if by magic. Gemma Durham and Helen Harries gave some fine performances, however the evening belonged to the four clowns who played more parts than the full cast of El Cid! Chris Thomas, Simon Cogan and Phil Bond had the audience rocking with laughter and I have to mention Chris Coleman who is an amazing talent of which RATS should be proud indeed. The properties team are to be commended Sue Osmolska, Barbara Scale and Kayt Gregory well done! I had never seen this play before and I look forward to seeing it again, this production will however be a tough act to follow. Well done Carol and RATS, looking forward to Avenue Q in July. Great night!
