Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is, I believe, an old pass-along plant. Ive run across it around abandoned homesteads in various locations around the state. It has been, and still is, used for medicinal purposes dating back thousands of years. Here, it thrives in a partially shaded location on the north facing side of an old juniper. The patch is about 25 feet long and 3 - 5 feet wide. In the deeper shade behind the horehound, black nightshade grows. It is an insect magnet, attracting small pollinators in droves. I count four butterflies in this photo but you might find more. In this location it requires no water and very little maintenance. I am unsure of the source.
