Horrified, saddened, sickened. I hope that the protests disrupt tourism and the flow of commerce, as New York City only enacts even the most minimal reforms when tourism and shopping are threatened. (Likewise I hope the Garner familys civil suit will result in financial settlements in the hundreds of millions.) Weve suffered through one vile travesty too many. For the last quarter of a century, since the Thompkins Square Park Police Riots of 1988, its been clear that New York City police have permission to act with a complete disregard of human decency, knowing theyre protected by a biased, racist, classist system: no civilian oversight, DAs who purposely sabotage the few cases before they go to trial. Something has to be done to reign in this police state.
