Horsepower of Various Motors Have you ever wondered where power comes from in the various bike motors. For years, I rode a 2001 Harley Electra Glide, with its 88 ci motor. That was the big motor at the time. I became disillusioned about power when riding in the mountains and having my ass kicked by a Honda 750 Magna (V4 90 deg motor). That beating led to me selling my bike and getting into sport touring. Simplifying matters, it has to do with the stroke and how even the cylinders fire. The least efficient is the V-twin with a 45-deg V, i.e. common on the Harley. PS. I’m not knocking HD. Wider angles, increase power because the firing order is more even. The HD motor also has two cylinders connected to a single journal, whereas the BMW (example) that has the boxer motor, has a 180 deg angle, thus the cylinders alternate evening at exactly 180 deg apart and balance themselves. The Harley VRod has a 60 degs V in the motor, the KTM - a 75 deg angle, the Rotax motor, uses a 80 Deg V, and the V-Strom, Ducati, Aprilla are all 90 Deg. This wider angles changes the sound dramatically, yet produces huge power gains for a V-twin. Bikes that have 3, 4 and 6 simply have a more evenly spaced firing orders. My Harley 88 ci (1450 cc) motor put out only 62 HP, while my smaller BMW 1130 cc motor cranked out nearly 100 HP, and my current Concours with its inline 4 (1352 cc motor) cranks out 157.7 HP and 100 ft lbs of torque. I’ve been maintaining this list for year. Yeah - I know, HP at the engine and wheel differ, but this is an idea of the differences.
