Hoshiarpur, July 17 In its drive against anti-social elements, the district police arrested four persons and seized smack and poppy husk from them. According to the police sources, Bulhowal police arrested Hardial Singh, son of Balbir Singh of Lambe and seized 9 gram smack from him. Mahilpur police arrested Gurdial Singh, son of Maha Singh of Pansera and Balbir Singh, alias Beeru, son of Joginder Singh of Sardulapur and seized 25 Kg and 3.5 Kg poppy husk respectively from them. Similarly, Tanda police arrested Inderjit Singh, son of Sohan Singh of Nainowal Vaid and seized 1 Kg poppy husk from him. All the accused were booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. ................................................................. Punjab Government is launching various projects and schemes to save ground water and provide irrigation facility to farmers where tubewell or canal irrigation is not possible. Government is launching first of its kind Lift Irrigation Project in the state in the Kandi area for irrigation purposes. Punjab Government has decided to launch this as Pilot Project in the district Hoshiarpur. Divulging this here today Sohan Singh Thandal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, said that this pilot project was being launched with the cost of Rs 31.58 Crore which would facilitate 14 villages of the area. He said that after the successful completion trial of this project more lift irrigation projects would be launched in the Pathankot and Kandi belt. This would help in making the area green and would make the farmers self sufficient in earning their livelihood on account of getting regular irrigation in their fields. Mr Thandal said that Rs 6.38 crore first instalment for this project has been issued, added that 700 acre kandi area would be irrigated with the launch of lift irrigation project. Under this project water would be lifted from the Kandi canal and put into the tanks built nearby and after desilting this water would be stored in the 70 feet high water tank. This stored water would be used for as drip irrigation for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits by the farmers of the nearby villages. He further said that this project would be completed by the ZEN irrigation Company which would also provide maintenance services for seven years. With the launch of the lift irrigation facilities in this area, Farmres would be able to contribute in the field of diversified agriculture which would also improve the economic level of people of kandi area. ....................................................................... Rs 3.19 crore has been spent for cleaning drains and strengthening of protection bandhs at river Beas and various choes to save the people and property from the fury of flood in the district. Disclosing this after inspecting the Dhussi bandh of river Beas today Varun Roojam, Deputy Commissioner, said that Dhussi bandh of river Beas had been strengthened at 3 places whereas drains at Kaulpur and Purana Bhangala had been cleaned for which Rs 2.75 core had been spent. Similarly, protection bandh on 10 choes at Tajewal, Bachhohi, Mal Baltohia, Dadiana, Malowal, Khunde, Hargarh etc had been strengthened with a cost of Rs 44 lakh. He has instructed the Drainage Department to get ready with 75000 sand filled gunny bags to meet any emergency. The department had 10000 sand filled bags in stock. The District Flood Control Room at district level and at sub division level had been set up which would function round the clock. ..........................................................................
