Hospitality Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. Hebrews 3:1-3 Hospitality is such a sweet gift in the Body of Christ. Sharing our homes, our food, our fellowship provides a safe environment for all kinds of opportunity to pass on your love, Lord. We got to experience it this past winter down south when the Vossens shared their Thanksgiving meal and their family with us; the Aycocks insisted we stay in their home rather than a motel. Both families showed your love by showing their love. My parents generation did this better than mine. People just dropped in for coffee, and there was always something around to share, cookies, cake or a meal. I remember being relieved when the people of our church started socializing at restaurants. That made life easier for us. We didnt have to worry about the state of our houses or the taste of our cake or being caught doing something we really didnt want to share. However, we lost some warmth in our interactions. Hospitality doesnt just occur over coffee. It is a sharing of ourselves and our belongings. I was proud of Joni when she hired a homeless man to shovel her drive, of Andy when he gave the young father money to buy diapers. I rejoice that Bridget is so active in providing a transition home for women getting out of prison. I admit that I have not always done this well; I got bucky when Andy would propose taking a homeless Coffee House person home for the night--absolutely certain they would bring me bedbugs. Deanna, have you forgotten all those people who stayed in your home for months while they got their marriages straightened out? I havent. As you said, the gift of hospitality is more than serving cake.
