Hot Suburb Update Issue 37 Not one of the forty-nine policy statements, plans and discussion papers issued by the new Liberal Government during the recent election campaign focussed on housing. So, can we expect any changes to the housing market? Housing is about people, not just policies, and any change in government means changes in other policies that indirectly affect housing. Public service cutbacks and lower defence commitments will lead to falls in housing demand in the ACT and NT which could lead to rent and then price falls. On the other hand, the Liberal’s promise to remove the mining tax and carbon tax, if implemented, could fuel new mining booms and create housing shortages in many mining towns, ports and fly-in fly-out locations of Qld, WA and NSW.
