Hot from the press; todays excerpt from the University of New Hampshire Freshman English Writing Course. TAKE NOTE I cant depend on my memory to remember my memories. The daybook keeps my writing muscles in condition; it lets me know what Im concerned with making into writing; it increases my productivity. The organization is simply a day-by-day chronology. When I change subject I write a code word--novel, poem, talk at St. Anselems-- in the left margin. That way I can look back through the book and collect all the notes Ive made on a single project or concern. How I use my daybook varies from time to time, but all the writing in the daybook is a form of talking to myself, a way of thinking on paper. Make the daybook your own. Dont try to follow anyone elses formula. And dont write it for another audience. Its a private place where you can think and where you can be dumb, stupid, sloppy silly; where you can do all the bad writing and bad thinking essential for those moments of insight that produce good writing. Your daybook might not--should not--be like mine. It may be a file stored in a computer where I have a folder called DAYBOOK. The poet Mekeel McBrides daybook is a bound sketch pad in which she draws and paints as well as writes. I envy her and have tried to imitate her, but it doesnt work for me. Theres no one correct way to write well; there are many ways, and it is your job to find what works for you and be ready to switch when it stops helping you write well. Prof. Donald M. Murray I have found mine(actually, I found it since 2009) Check my profile pic :) I hope you find your own daybook soon. Cos you need it!
