House Approves Legislation to Modify Foster Care Deduction OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma House of Representatives voted unanimously today to ensure all foster care parents qualify for a deduction on their income tax. Rep. Pat Ownbey, who presented the measure, said current law only allows a married couple to file jointly for the $5,000 deduction. Senate Bill 1621, by Sen. Frank Simpson and Ownbey, would expand that to include single foster care parents. “The original law was written to keep married couples from each filing separately for the deduction, but that also meant that single foster care parents could not receive it,” said Ownbey, R-Ardmore. “We need more foster care parents in Oklahoma. Anything we can do to bolster foster parents is good for Oklahoma’s child welfare system.” Married couples each filing separately for the deduction would receive a $2,500 deduction each under the bill. The measure was approved by a vote of 89-0.
