House Niggers Part III - August 17th, 1965 “Coming from a working class family I am keenly interested in seeing that ordinary Bermudians are given the opportunity to advance and prosper as far as their capabilities permit them to do. However, I am perfectly prepared to part company with any person or group of persons who I find to be motivated by intentions which I think are not in the interests of the country. For example, if I am satisfied that any person or group of persons are communists or fascists and are being affected in their political actions by either communism or fascism, then I shall not hesitate to dissociate myself from any such persons.” On the other hand he was prepared to work with any persons who were prepared to see that democracy reigns in Bermuda. He was then asked what steps he would take if either of those ideologies (fascism or communism) became prevalent in the PLP. His Reply: “I am not saying any such thing is imminent, but if any such eventuality should occur I should immediately dissociate myself from it. I do not think the general membership of the PLP would be prepared to allow such elements to take over the control of the party. My own view is that the majority of the members of the PLP and its supporters want to see an articulate representation of the views of ordinary Bermudians of either race, and that they would not knowingly give their support to any element that they find are prepared to wreck the whole of the community to achieve some nebulous ends”.
