House Republicans continue attack on food stamps. The Hunger Action Network of New York State said today that it was a mistake for the U.S. House of Representatives to remove the SNAP program from the Farm Bill. "We oppose the efforts of the House Republican leadership to cut food stamps for hungry Americans by removing SNAP from the Farm Bill. Their efforts will also hurt family farmers and our food system. We need a Farm Bill that promotes healthy food, provides strong financial support for family farmers and rural communities, ends hunger, and helps protect our soils and water supplies. Unfortunately this is not the agenda of the House Republican leadership," said Mark Dunlea, Executive Director of the Hunger Action Network of New York State. Critics of the present farm bill contend that it promotes a unhealthy food diet based on overly processed food high in sugar and fat while providing tax subsidies to wealthy investors and agribusiness.
