How Alhaji Shehu Shagari Ruined Nigeria in 4 Years In January 1966, the Nigerian Army took over the government of Nigeria and remained in power until October 1979, a period of 13 years. Alhaji Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) became the first EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT of Nigeria. Before the Army handed over to the civilians, they fought a civil war, enjoyed oil boom from the Arab-Israeli conflict. Then Shagari became president. In 1983, the Army came back to power under Major General Mohammad Buhari. The Shagari government was accused of massive corruption and ineptitude. Over 200 politicians were thrown into jail, including performing Governors like Ambrose Ali of Bendel State, Sam Mbakwe of Imo State, and Lateef Jakande of Lagos State. The first personal casualty of that coup was my food at the cafeteria of University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus! Those in UPN-controlled states suffered even more; no bursary! A few years later some of the same politicians who were sent to jail for corruption were released to serve as ministers under the military! The Army remained in power for another 16 years, less three months. When it comes to corruption, the gate to heaven is not in Nigeria. How can I win a case where the charge is that I am Black? My point is that these guys tell us what we want to hear. Corruption is so institutionalized in Nigeria that those who earn N400,000.00 a year easily pay N400,000.00 a year for each of their kids in college. And they have no other ostensible means of income. Digest that carefully. Today, the same person, then a military junta, who took over from Alhaji Shehu Shagari in 1983 wants to be Nigerians Executive President, singing the same old song of corruption and ineptitude. Could it be possible that in 4 years Alhaji Shehu Shagari so ruined Nigeria to warrant military intervention? I dont think so! The 1983 coup was about power, not corruption.
