How Caste-System Came- Caste system was restricted to Brahman and non-Brahman only. Different caste names were not known earlier. The variety of caste names came through British Census of 1942. British govt started caste census in 1942 in India. Before that only the priestly community used to identify them as Brahmans and other non-Brhaman people as Hindus only. It is prominent in the Land-transfer Deed (Dalil) in which people usually declare their caste identity along with father’s name. At that time very few non-Brhaman people had any caste identity at all. But for the purpose of official requirement the census staff asked and registered their occupation name in the document. Thus occupation based caste names came into being. A diverse occupation based caste name appeared such as Fishermen, Milkmen, Weaver, Carpenter, Goldsmith, Blacksmith, etc.
