How Do You See Yourself? For generations, we have allowed the numbers that correspond to how many years we have been on the planet to tell us how to feel and how to behave. As with any other aspect of life, what we mentally accept and believe becomes true for us. Well, it is time to change our beliefs about aging. When I looked around and see frail, sick, frightened older people, I say to myself: It doesn’t have to be that way. Many of us have learned that by changing our thinking, we can change our lives. So I know we can make aging a positive, vibrant, healthy experience. I am now in my 87th year, and I am a big, strong, healthy girl. In many ways, I feel younger than I did at 30 or 40 because I no longer feel the pressures to conform to certain standards imposed by society. I am free to do what I want. I no longer search for anyone’s approval, nor do I care what anyone says about me. I please myself much more often. Peer pressure has definitely become less important. In other words, for the first time in my life, I am putting myself first. And it feels good. There was a time when I allowed the media and so-called authority figures to dictate my behavior, to make judgments about what I wore and which products I bought. Back then, I truly believed that if I did not use all the products that were advertised, then I was not “acceptable.” One day, I realized that using all these products only made me acceptable for one day. The next day, I had to start over. I remember spending endless hours plucking my eyebrows in order to be acceptable. That all seems so silly at this point in my life. In the early part of the 20th century, our life expectancy was 49 years. Today—more than 100 years later, it’s about 85. Tomorrow it could be 125. It’s time for us to change the way we view our later years. No longer will we accept the notion that we must become sick and die, lonely and afraid. We can take control of our thoughts, and we can create an elder time that’s far grander than any other generation. I see myself as vital, vivacious, healthy, fully alive, and contributing until my last day. I’m at peace with my age. As I move into my treasure years, I allow myself to become an Elder of Excellence. I lead the way in showing others how to be fully alive at every age. We have the ability to contribute to our society and make the world a better place for our grandchildren. I love experiencing every age. I rejoice in each passing year. Let’s affirm: I am young and beautiful …at every age. I honor and respect all the elders in my life. I think new and different thoughts each day. My life is a glorious adventure. I have no limitations. I take time to play with my inner child. I meditate, take quiet walks, enjoy nature; I enjoy spending time alone. Laughter is a big part of my life; I hold nothing back. I live every day to the fullest. I have all the time in the world.
