How I Spent My Summer (Vacation?) Set up DSL, finally, after paying for the service for two years. I loathe having to mess with wires and such. Tracked tornado on Internet radar and wrote a commentary about it. Was published on another company’s website. Discovered I could drive traffic to the company’s site. Became fascinated with watching the page count increase. Vanity, all vanity. Got disgusted with myself and wrote another commentary, “Self-loathing in the twenty-first century.” The article was published on yet another company’s website. Again, was fascinated watching page count tick up. Decided to join Twitter. Was delighted following publishers and agents. This lasted about a week. Hooked on tweets, sleuthed my first “news” story and interview in a decade. (Last time I wrote a news story was in 2002; things have changed.) Again, published story on another company’s website. The interview was worthwhile and did some good. I wasn’t paid but owned the copyright. Learned copyright doesn’t mean much these days. Horrified to see bloggers copy and paste the story on their ad-laden sites. Was advised I should be happy my name is at the top of a Google search. Really? Spent three days refreshing myself on copyright law. Wrote myself a note: just write “copywrong” and be done with it. Decided it was time to develop my own website. Registered my domain name. Yeah. Spent a week reading about website platforms and blogs. The more I absorbed information, the more I questioned who owns what information. And why? – oh gosh, that question is beyond my brain cell and mortal time capacity. What have I learned? I am easily overwhelmed and often discouraged. When I get the right voice going, my angst turns out to be funny. But seriously, I have to consider it could take as long to jump in with a blog, as it took me to hook up the DSL. ‘Til then, glad to know friends like you. Thanks for reading.
