How Jonathan stopped UNILAG renaming -Fayemi Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Thursday revealed how President Goodluck Jonathan stopped the renaming of University of Lagos after the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola. He said the late Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Jacob Ade-Ajayi, played a major role by writing a letter advising the President to reconsider the decision. Speaking at the commendation service organised for the late Professor of History in Ado-Ekiti, Fayemi said he admonished the President that Nigeria was passing through a turbulent period and that it required a “sense of history, institutional memory and continuity” to help restore stability. He added that Ade-Ajayi further stated in the letter that, “University of Lagos is an important parts of our institutional history and I urge you to restore its founding name and consider a more meaning and befitting way in which to pay tribute to Chief MKO Abiola.” The Governor described Ajayi as “a big believer in Nigeria’s possibilities” and “a patriot who invested his enormous intellect in the quest for a better nation.” Fayemi said the state had taken appropriate steps to immortalize its heroes within Heroes Park especially designated area that would house the tombs or epitaphs of qualifying exceptional Ekiti sons and daughters with the consent of their families.
