How Penang was opened by Captain Francis Light. (Step 1,2 & 3 ) When Captain Francis Light. 11th August 1786, founder of Penang Island was here, there were about 10,000 people living on this Island, and mangrove swamp was all over the shore line area at esplanade. Wild boar were roaming around freely. He applied 3 main strategy to open up Penang Island. 1) Strategy No 1. He fired 10,000 silver coins from the ship to the esplanade mangrove shore line area and tell the people that the 10,000 silver coins are theirs for the picking. Anyone who chop, cut and cleared the mangrove swamp and pick the silver coins, it belongs to them. And the local people around at that time cleared the mangrove swamp at the esplanade area to get the 10,000 silver coins. And that is how the esplanade area was cleared of its mangrove swamp and Fort Cornwallis was build there eventually. 2) Strategy No 2. Then as Superintendent of Prince Of Wales ( Penang Island ) he cleared and build roads to establish the inner city. Beach Street, Chulia Street, Victoria Street, Farquhar Street, etc.....and houses followed to be built along these main streets. 3) Strategy No 3. Building the interior of Penang Island like Air Itam, Botanical Garden Area, Coastal Areas of Northam Road and Weld Quey etc he announce to all people on the Island that whosoever that goes into the inner island and cleared the land (chopped down the trees) , perimeter it, then come to him and he will give them the title deed to ownership of the piece of land whatever size that they can clear and perimeter. This piece of land will then belong to the person/s who cleared the piece of land for FREE. And this my friends, is how Penang Island was opened by Captain Francis Light.
