How To Appreciate Urdu Poetry : Thanks to my friend Dr. Barshani Gokhale, I have a venue for the proposed half day workshop (first in a series of several) on the theme captioned above. She has her clinic, with an attached room to seat 25-30 comfortably, and she gave me the initial momentus. The workshop will be aimed at those whose knowledge of Urdu is based on Bollywood films and songs alone, and therefore avoid the jargon and Persian or Arabic / Turkish -laced words and phrases which are the usual stumbling blocks for the greenhorns. I will be reciting mainly couplets and quartrains, with translation and transcreation, plus notes for grasping the multiple / deeper implications. One major component of the w/s will be how some ambitious proteges of mine have written pedestrian poetry, and how I have slowly transformed those words into rather appealing poetry, also how the line structure matters the most, as simple arrangement and rearrangement of words can cause upheavals in a language as sensitive and profound as Urdu.
