How To Be Married Romance 6 Days and Counting Down Whats the most romantic thing youve ever done for your spouse? Youve probably gathered from my recent posts that I am a hopeless romantic. Now, before anyone tries to revoke my man card for admitting such a thing, remember that I own my own lumbermill. Hence, my man card is irrevocable. As a romantic, I try very hard to do just the right thing, find the right gift and say the right words. I still try to win Melody over all the time. That said, our most romantic gestures towards one another havent been those things born of grand plans. Its been those things that just happened...just because. For me, its easy to remember the most romantic thing Melody has ever done for me. It came at a time when I asked her to give up all of her security and to come with me...moving away from everything she knew. I had been working in Penelope for a year and we were looking at building a home here. While we were building, we were lucky enough to be able to stay in a small frame home here. While we both felt blessed to have a place to stay so close to the school, the home wasnt in the condition that Melody was used to. After all, the home we had in Troy was completely redone. In fact, it was truly stunning after 15 years of steady hard work on it. I brought Melody up here to see the place we were going to be staying while our home was built. It looked a little rough. It needed a family in it and it needed lots of work. It was a gracious offer for us to be there, despite of how it might have compared to the home we were leaving. Still, I was asking Melody to trust me and move away from her family, away from the home wed spent 15 years working on, away from friends and away from the comfort you get from knowing your surroundings. I was asking her to stay with me, no matter where I went. And she did. I underestimated her. I thought shed turn her nose up because the home needed so much work. Not only did she not turn her nose up, she loved the little place the whole time we were there. She said that it reminded her of her grandmothers home. To me, this is the most romantic thing shes ever done for me. It was a huge move, a huge change and it was all trust on her part. I asked her recently what she thought the most romantic thing Id ever done for her was. I could think of a few things I thought shed say. There were a few thing I thought I had done that were romantic. What she said, blew me away. I didnt think it counted as romantic...at all. The little house I mentioned earlier is where I seemingly won her heart all over again. We didnt have heat in the bedroom where we were staying and it was mid-winter. It was a very cold night and the wind from the north that was blowing through Penelope also blew right through the old boards of that home. It was bitter cold and a little damp. Melody was getting ready for bed and I had just slid between the covers. The sheets felt like they had come straight out of the freezer. They were even a little hard...crispy cold...shockingly cold. I remember thinking that Melody is really going to hurt when she gets in bed. So, I moved over from the drivers side of the bed and laid on her side. That way, her side would be warm when she finally got in bed. Naturally, romance is found in the heart-felt gifts and the loving things that are said. But, for us, the most romantic times in our lives have always been the things that weve done for one another simply because we care. If you plan on keeping romance alive for a very long time, certainly, make the big grand gestures. Those are important, too. But big grand gestures alone will never make up for not doing the little things every single day. Romance has more to do with the accumulation of love and caring than it does buying the biggest ring. You dont use romance like a medicine to heal a sick relationship. Romance is the food that keeps the relationship healthy. Tomorrow...The Marital Geneva Convention
