How To Handle Long Term Unemployment When you are trying to land a job of your dreams or just any job has become extremely difficult, know that this is a common struggle. Many people have spoken about being jobless for months even reaching a year. To add to your stress, there is stigma that tags alone – companies who find out that you have been jobless for a lengthy period, believes that you are lazy and an all-round- bad-worker. Obviously, this is not the case. Read further for the guideline to handling a long-term unemployment. Questions to ask yourself There are a few questions that you should ask yourself in order to know whether you are doing your job search effectively. How many hours a day do you spend searching for a job? How narrow is your niche when searching for a job? Have you cleaned up and polished your CV? Are you sure that the references listed on your CV will give positive feedback? When you go to interviews, are you well prepared? Is your social media profiles clear of any discrimination to yourself? Ways to handle when experiencing long-term unemployment Relax – do something with your time Yes, there are bills to pay and things to do, and that is why you probably feel that you should be searching for a job with every waking hour. Not a good idea. You should not forget that you have a life to live. Take time to do the hobbies you always wanted to do, or even volunteer somewhere. Anything. Just do something. Keep up the positive attitude It can be daunting to search all day and every day for a job, and yet find yourself jobless; however, the condition of your mind and attitude contributes greatly. Therefore, every now and then, it is acceptable to vent, but you should allow your situation to dictate your life and the people around you. If you find yourself drowning in your negative emotions, then express yourself to the people close to you, this will help to release any anxiety or tension you might be feeling. Keep active This pairs well with the previous tip. Keep yourself active by doing exercise. Regular exercise will contribute to your body and mind. In terms of positively affecting your mind, exercise will teach you self-discipline and keep a positive mind set going especially in a time of a lengthy unemployment period. With these tips, try your best to keep positive and remember to keep moving. Remember that your attitude towards the situation is importat, and therefore you should not voice negative thoughts, instead speak positively, such as “I will get the job”, or “This is only temporary”.
