How To Pick A Real Olive Oil 1. Look for a single country of origin rather than having several countries listed. Also, always be wary of labels saying packed in Italy. You dont want your Olive Oil just packed in Italy, you want it actually grown and processed there too. 2. Look at when the olive oil was made. Olive oil has a 1-3 year shelf-life, though Id recommend staying under the 2 year mark to make sure your oil isnt rancid. 3. Look for Extra Virgin Olive Oil - this means the olive oil was produced by simply pressing out the oil, with no chemicals used. But be wary, there is no regulation on Extra Virgin so many of these oils contain vegetable oils, peroxide, and some have been heated enough to kill all the good nutrients in the bottle. Dont even consider regular Olive Oil that is not labelled Extra Virgin. Just focus on Extra Virgin, and then try to verify after purchase that it tastes like real Extra Virgin Olive Oil. 4. Look for oil in metal or dark glass containers. EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) doesnt play well with light or other types of containers (clear glass or plastic). 5. Look at oil for more than just the price you see. More expensive doesnt mean real and cheaper doesnt necessarily mean fake either. The truth is, many real olive oil producers are being forced out of business by the cheap fake imports. So if you shop only by looking at price, you are likely to get fake olive oil. You have to know what to look for. 6. Ignore colors. Pure olive oils vary on different colors so color is not something you should focus on. Oils aint always oils.
