How To Protect Your Plants & Trees During A Heat Wave A lot of what applies to lawns applies to watering your plants and trees. Remember to water heavily at infrequent intervals. Plants require 1” to 2” of water each week. Lawn roots are closer to the surface than those of trees and shrubs so provide ample time for water to penetrate deeply into the root system. Water plants as early in the morning as possible. I water my trees once a week with a sprinkler for 30 minutes which is about 1 ½”. I love to use mulch around plants and trees to help retain moisture. Young plants and trees that were planted during the spring need extra care and attention. Water them every two to three days. Potted plants need water every day because they dry out quickly. Consider moving them into the shade until the heat wave passes. Do not water the leaves as that can damage the plant and promote fungal growth. Do not prune or fertilize your plants. Anything that causes plants to lose moisture is best avoided. The exception is flowering annuals which need regular feedings to keep their blooms lush.
