How Would Todays Animal Planet People Handle This Situation? Steve Irwin stated several times that his father taught him that when dealing with an animal it is all about the animal and not about you, so he gave very little thought, if any, to how he himself came across when interacting with wildlife. The result was that Irwin often looked awkward, clumsy, or downright goofy when handling or presenting an animal. This is what leads some to mistakenly assume he was rough or outright abusive with the animals, when he certainly was not. Contrast the lack of concern with his own image with the folks you see on Animal Planet and elsewhere today. Would any of the so-called animal people today have apologized for this bite, or would they have used it as a chance to look tough and brave? Sorry about that, he says here, and his sincerity is obvious. He wanted us to love and admire the wildlife and the worlds they live in. As a human being, he of course wanted love and admiration, too. But he did not want it at the expense of the animals, and therein lies the difference between him and the others. --SADL
