How about a little history!! Two hundred years ago, the citizens of Plattsburgh were in turmoil. British and American military forces were stepping up preparations for an anticipated land and naval battle that was expected to culminate at Plattsburgh. Those families that could were packing supplies and valuables to flee to Peru and beyond. However, it seemed not everyone supported the US military presence. This is a letter from Col. John P. Fenwick to (Judge) Henry Delord asking him to do something about an attack on one of his soldiers by a local person. Plattsburgh Aug 6 1814 (Judge Henry Delord) Very great irregularity exists amongst some of the inhabitants of the Village & I can scarcely believe such persons can be Americans. Even in time of peace discharging of fire arms is not allowed where any police is established & in time of war it must be attended with serious consequences. Alarms are created, the soldiery may be irritated & in themselves attempt redress. This remark may apply in the case of this day. One of my men was wounded this morning by a musket ball discharged by some licentious or ill disposed person. I pray you, sir, to cause enquiry to be made in this case. As a magistrate I well assure myself you will conceive it your duty to suppress such acts. As the father of a family & a good citizen you will equally feel bound to protect both, who cannot walk the streets of Plattsburgh without exposure & risque of losing their lives. Besides, it is in violation of the orders of your magistracy, declaring it a breach of peace, & also of a Genl Order which I shall enforce. I understand my Patrol was threaten’d a few nights ago. I shall do myself the honor of calling upon you this afternoon. John P. Fenwick Col. Comdg. (This letter is among thousands of the Delord documents on loan to SUNY Plattsburgh Special Collections.)
