How about that rifle run? Class 09-85 -- I was worried I might forget the rifle number so I wrote it on my sneakers in a way I could read it by looking down if I need. I didnt forget it. I remember we were supposed to carry the rifle in front (port arms?) and by the time we got off the beach portion and going by the chow hall, I was hugging that gun like my life depended on it. It wasnt very military like, nut it wasnt going to hit the deck. Didnt want to be ordered to get on the truck and have to do it again with the next group. When we stopped in the rose garden behind batt I, there were these kitchen workers (from the enlisted mess hall) having a smoke break enjoying our pain as their show. Gsgt Holtry pulled me out of formation after getting my sip of water from the hose, and from that point it was side straddle hops begin... and yelling in my face. Im sure there was some of on your face.... on your feet... on your face... thrown in there too. Couldnt understand most of what he was saying, just listened close enough for anything that sounded like a question I needed to respond yes or no to. I kept side straddle hopping moving backwards with each one till I hit the brick wall and had to adjust for some distance and start again. A couple of time he stopped his yelling and got real close and looked in my eyes, I suppose to see if it looked like I was about to pass out. I didnt know about that, but I had been seeing stars (pops of white light) for I dont know how long, another added feature to the workout... My question, does anyone remember how long the rifle run was? I thought it was 1.5 to 2 miles. Once back in the Batt, before I started changing to shower and dress for class, I heard the dreaded Candidate Vargas, report to the Drill Instructors office! I said to a nearby candy-o I havent changed yet, and he answered with Just get your butt down there... I was expecting more PT, but lucked out, since when I did the facing move and stopped facing in the office and said .... reporting as ordered, sir! Ssgt Bowling, USMC just started laying into me about his not putting up with slow bodies that would slow his class up.... and on and on....and then he dismissed me. I was thinking what about all the PT I heard about... whew! A lucky morning. Thats a long way to ask a question...So, how long was that rifle run?
