How an Eid Breakfast turns out to be a lesson about values. This morning, after Eid prayers, my family had breakfast at a fast-food joint. So after eating and as we were about to leave, my mother told us to carry the trays and clear them. My younger brothers were startled and my youngest brother asked why and my mum told him that although its the workers job to clear the trays, we must be mindful and clear our own trays. Although its a small gesture, it goes a long way and it can, make a difference. The values she was teaching my brothers were simple yet vital: 1) Put yourself in the shoes of others, if you were to be in the shoes of the cleaners and workers, would you be grateful if people were to clear after their own meals for you? If yes, then do it. Do it for them. Theyll appreciate it. 2) If you want God to help you, then help others, no matter how small the act is. 3) Just because not many or nobodys doing it, doesnt mean it doesnt need to be done. Dont be conformists. Its about displaying good akhlak (manners and etiquette). When people notice that Muslims are doing small gestures to ease peoples workload or difficulties etc, it will correct the common misconceptions they initially have towards us and it can inspire others to do the same thing. 4) Be selfless. The Prophet SAW is always selfless. Eid Mubarak :)
