And how can someone go near him, who does not come to him to learn, because he is gentle and humble of heart?" ~ Saint Augustine, "Marriage and Virginity" Let the soul who desires to follow Jesus Christ do so like the most desperate soul in the universe, proclaiming their utter lostness without Him; let that soul, in humility, come and learn of their utter dependence on He who is Faithful and True; let that soul eat His flesh and drink His blood and walk in gentleness and humility, just like the Master Himself. Guard your hearts, loved ones: proximity to the Lamb of God does not prove that one is gentle and humble of heart. Consider Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, whose soul was a black abyss of rebellion, pride and greed. Therefore, do not incline your soul to walk in the way of pride, for the procession of the saints is led by the Lamb of God who is gentle and humble of heart, yet who opposes the proud with a fierce and fiery jealousy for the eternal glory of the Father.
