Experts warn the crisis is piling the pressure on overstretched A&E units as older people are forced to turn to hospitals for help. According to figures from the Health and Social Care information Centre, 294,080 fewer people over 65 are getting state-funded social care compared to when Mr Cameron became PM. In 2010, a total of 1,147,695 had the care they needed to keep their independence, compared to just 853,615 this year. Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham warned that huge cuts in social care were adding to the NHS crisis at A&E units. “David Cameron’s decision to take home care away from vulnerable older people is piling pressure on hospitals,” he said. “The Government’s cuts to social care are a root cause of the current A&E hospital crisis. “Without support at home, older people are turning to A&Es and thousands are waiting hours on end on trolleys for a bed. It is a complete false economy.”
