(THOSE THINGS WERE SO) They received the gospel from the church and confirmed the revelation they had been given through scripture that had NOW BEEN OPEN UP TO THEM THROUGH GRACE. “And they said one to the other: Was not our heart burning within us, whilst he spoke in this way, and OPENED TO US THE SCRIPTURES? Luke 24:32 A few Key words to look at in 2 Timothy 3:10 1. The Greek word ophelimos (profitable) used in verse 16 means useful not sufficient. Scripture is useful for doctrine… 2. The Greek word pasa, which is often rendered as all, actually means every, and it has the sense of referring to each and every one of the class denoted by the noun connected with it. If you were to interpret this in the way protestants do then we would have Sola Gospel of Mark, sola Gospel of John sola 1 Timothy 3:15……that one has a nice ring to it. 3. The Scripture that St. Paul is referring to here is the Old Testament, a fact which is made plain by his reference to the Scripture’s being known by Timothy from infancy It is profitable for among other things, to prove the fulfilment of the prophecies of Christ which was the apostles primary way of converting people to the faith beside miracles. It was “known to him”, it was also “known” to the Pharisees responsible for Christ’s death who could not understand their own scriptures, but it was not even truly “REVEALED” or “OPENED” to Timothy until Paul, through the grace of God, as a member of the church opened him up to the gospel mystically contained in them. “Howbeit WE SPEAK WISDOM among the perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, neither of the princes of this world that come to nought; 7But we speak the wisdom of GOD IN A MYSTERY, a wisdom WHICH IS HIDDEN, which God ordained before the world, unto our glory .. So who is the man of God Paul is talking to? The impossibility of 2 Timothy 3:10-17 supporting Sola Scriptura is further defined by the fact that in believing this in the way traditions of Protestantism teach, you in tern create contradictions in scripture. Paul tells the Thessalonians: Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle. Thessalonians 2:15. What are traditions past down by words? Traditions that are purposely not going to be written down during times of persecution that would further infuriate the dogs and pigs and limit the expansion of the church or maybe even crush it? Is this why the church created the symbols of the fish, and the three legged table? We read in Hebrews 9: “Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.
