How common is Prostate Cancer I hear you ask?? In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, after skin cancer. It is expected that prostate cancer will continue to be the most common cancer diagnosed in men in 2020. Over 20,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, which accounts for over 30% of all new cases of cancer diagnosed in men, and is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Australian men. A prostate cancer diagnosis is least common in men under 50 years old (less than 3%). The chance of a prostate cancer diagnosis increases with age; almost 80% of all diagnoses occur in men aged 60 and over. More than 3,000 men died from prostate cancer in Australia every year, making it the fourth leading cause of death for men. Compared with other cancers, prostate cancer has one of the highest 5-year survival rates after diagnosis (92%).
