How could you ‘start’ a math class using an iPad (mobile - TopicsExpress

How could you ‘start’ a math class using an iPad (mobile device)? Imagine as you walk into class on the board/SmartBoard were instructions to get out your iPad/iTouch and start playing a math game. Initially you are asked only to explore the game and figure out how it functions but being a smart tech savvy student the game function is very simple. And since you learned this content material yesterday you progress through the game and are having fun seeing how far you can get before the teacher starts class. 7 minutes later your teacher is ready to start class, your mind is in math mode and the rest of class goes great The next day the same thing happens you come to class early so you can get a few extra minutes to “play” math. At the end of the week the teacher asks you to send your scores to her so that she can see how you are doing and if she needs to keep teaching this topic or can go on to the next one. What we just did is what I call Bellwork and its a great way to get your students working as soon as they enter the room. It does take a little practice of setting up the procedure of how it runs. But if you have enough devices for your students its a simple and quick way to start a class. Questions: What could you do to adapt this idea if you didn’t have enough devices? Can you think of another way to use iPads (mobile devices) to start a class? Can you think of anyway to improve this idea? or maybe an argument why you think this is a bad idea?
