How deeply we delude ourselves. We tell ourselves that going paperless is going "green." That online banking and internet shopping will lessen greenhouse gasses. That a sponge we can throw in the dishwasher is better than using paper towels and is "saving the rainforest." And all the while, as we soothe our conscience by recycling cans and papers, we miss the big picture entirely. We fail to realize that our culture is, first and foremost, one of instant gratification and needless excess. That the very products with which we choose to "go green" are unnecessary, that our whole lifestyle is out of sync with the environment. And that all those computers that store banking and billing information, all those multiplex storage facilities, all those delivery trucks, are sucking up fossil fuels and spewing out greenhouse gasses by the billions of cubic centimeters
