How did the Indus Valley begin? Approximately 5000 years ago, a nomadic people crossed the Himalayas and made their way into northwest India from Sumeria, which is modern day Iran. They settled near modern day Karachi, a rich land fertilised by the river systems of the Indus. Here they found ample water, food, and fuel supply as well as clay for making bricks and wood to burn bricks. By about 4000BC, they were living in small settlements and growing wheat, barley, and other vegetables and fruit in the fertile soil provided by the yearly flooding of the Indus River. By 3500 BC, they were building cities and had a strong central government and an organised society, a shared culture and a shared language. That was the beginning of the Indus Valley Civilisation. The Indus Valley Civilisation flourished from 2500 BC to about 1500 BC and was spread over the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir to the sand dunes facing the Arabian Sea. They built some of the world’s first planned cities and created one of the first ever written languages.
