How did we get the idea that white men with gleaming teeth and big gray hair and pressed blue suits and red ties and flags in their lapels who know oodles about revenue and costs but next to nothing about Reconstruction or Europe in the 30s or exactly where the Gaza Strip is or how Keynesian economics matters should be in charge of making and executing our laws? When did we decide it was not helpful — that it was suspect, even — to be educated in the sense that the Framers were educated in order to be trusted with the stewardship of the nation? There is more to statesmanship than being able to run numbers and squeeze the last ounce of efficiency out of capital assets.
