How did you spend your days when you were 9 years old? When Esther was 9, she the main carer for her HIV-positive mother and her little sister, Tino. When my mum is ill I fear for her. It hurts in my heart, and when she cries I feel like crying, said Esther. The family lived in a slum in Zimbabwe, and both girls were small for their age due to malnutrition. Neither went to school. When their mother died of AIDS, Esther and Tino moved in with their uncle. But he was also struggling to survive, and neglected the young girls. Esther and Tino were given a second chance in life when they moved into SOS Childrens Village Waterfalls. This video shows them flourishing in their new SOS home! Esther is enjoying her childhood for the first time, and able to play and have fun like any other 9-year-old. I lived a miserable life Esther recalls, Its much better now. About her new life Esther says, I like being looked after. I like that I eat well in the evening - and also in the afternoon and morning. And I go to school... I will be a success!
