How do I let go of expectations? In my recovery I have found - TopicsExpress

How do I let go of expectations? In my recovery I have found that expectations are resentments waiting to happen. The definition of expectation is ‘a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future.’ I have no control over what will happen in the future. My addict mindset likes to make me think that I do, but who am I to have such power? I am certainly no superman. What I do have control over is right here and right now; the present moment. And that is something I did not live in for years. I was never settled, always looking for more. I could not be in the here and the now. By letting go of expectations (and it is a daily reprieve) I have found a new sense of relief. I now see that people will act out of their own self-interest and the only thing I have the control over is myself, my actions, my reactions. With that comes a whole new sense of power and influence in my life. For so long, I placed my will on others. Manipulated and deceived to get what I wanted, which ultimately contributed to a constant cycle of guilt and shame. By embracing and respecting my authentic self, I am watching as the need to have expectations diminishes. One day at a time. How do you let go of expectations? What has worked for you? Ask4recovery
