How do we bridge the very practical and mundane divide between white and black and brown and yellow and red in the USA? Im not even talking about a high concept like ending racism. I just mean that, as a white man, I have no idea how to meet and interact with, for instance, African Americans on an equal footing. I mean I have some obvious ideas for how I could do it, but it seems as if, due to economic segregation, the only choice I have is to make a very conscious effort and put myself in some kind of context that I would not naturally ever drift into. I feel like I need to join an African American church, or seek out a group that consciously seeks to bridge the divide, like maybe the NAACP or the Rainbow Coalition. I dont see another way that it is likely to happen. And obviously Im talking about forming a relationship - something more than casually passing in public. I am frequently around people of all races and ethnicities - but how to actually form a relationship that isnt consciously architected around race? I dont know if its possible for me.
