How do you feel about the minimum wage with regards to our industry? I personally feel that Australias high minimum wage is doing a lot of damage to our industry, we live in an absurd country when you either find a job that pays around $20 an hour or are forced to work for $6.50 an hour on the dole. Industries like Animation, Game Development and Visual Effects, could comfortably rest between those extremes and be globally competitive. It does run contrary to most of my political opinions that we should abolish the minimum wage, and I can see how it is such a great thing for fast food workers, teachers and most people whos jobs cant be outsourced, but our industry needs some sort of an exception. Because the minimum wage is so high, companies like Animal Logic, really dont have any incentive to hire locally, almost anybody, from anywhere in the world would be willing to work at those rates. Someone I met from there the other day was joking about half of the office speaking French. Its a real shame because Animal Logic used to be where so many Aussies got their foot in the door. I remember when I first started learning about 3D animation in 2000 when the matrix came out and everybody said what a great future this country would have in these digital industries with its highly educated population, then a about a year later the Disney animation studio shut down and it was the beginning of the end.
