How do you say Goodbye? How do you walk into a room, knowing that when you walk out, You will never see that person again? Ive been struggling with this question for the past week, You see my Grandmother is dying. and when we next visit before heading north, it will most assuredly be the last time. she wont go today, Nor possibly next week, but the odds of her making it till we come back next year.. are virtually non existent. So how do you do it? I thought maybe by writing it down I could begin to figure it out. The visit, I can do that, the visit will be enjoyable, but it will have to end, and then what? Do you acknowledge it? does it remain unspoken? Do you simply get up and walk away? a glance behind? Try not to look? I think it would feel a bit like Lot and Lots Wife, and I think salt might be in my future if I tried it. At times like this I wish I had a deep faith, that I could fall back on that faith and believe that we will all meet again (dont know where, dont know when). but while I consider myself spiritual, I have trouble with the idea of an afterlife. Which brings me back round to the question. How do you say goodbye? Its not that Ive not had to deal with my share of death, Our first year together Angel and I attended near a dozen funerals. But this may be the first time that Ive had that opportunity to actually say goodbye before the end, So Im left still trying to figure it out, If youve read this far, Youll see Ive come to no conclusion, But maybe have a better understanding of the question. I suppose, In true Hochman fashion, Ill wing it, make it up as I go, Perhaps thats the only way you can do it.
