How do you talk to parents and people in the general public about early childhood development and the importance of quality early education and care? The words and stories that you use to describe early childhood development can dramatically shift people’s understandings of the importance of quality ECEC and the work of educators and teachers. The Frameworks Institute have just completed a large research study to map the gaps and overlaps between how the Australian public and how experts understand childhood development. These gaps can limit how people outside the sector understand the importance of quality ECEC, while the overlaps suggest opportunities to change the public conversation around the importance of early childhood education. The Frameworks Institute asked people to describe quality ECEC. These are the responses they got: - Clean, safe environment - Healthy food - A nurturing environment - A place to socialise with other children. They then told them to imagine it as amplifying development. Watch the video to see how the responses change. Amplifying development was just one of seven metaphors that the Frameworks Institute developed to reframe the discussion around early childhood development and ECEC. The effectiveness of these metaphors was tested by surveying over 4000 Australians from outside the ECEC sector. So… how do you talk to people about early childhood education and care?
