How does not the holy example of the martyrs put to shame the weakness and cowardice of Christians who find it difficult to make sacrifices for the faith, to bear the yoke of the gospel—who for the sake of some temporal advantage are ready to make a compromise with the world and its principles, to the detriment of their immortal souls and to the scandal of others? O, how will such Christians one day regret their half-heartedness and cowardice! On the other hand, how richly will God reward the smallest sacrifice we make in His service! "For I reckon that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us." (Rom. VIII, 18.)
